ABSENT – PRESENT
TERRY FOX ERINNERN

absent – present
TERRY FOX erinnern

A moment can be remembered, but it cannot be repeated. The ephemeral is a central feature of Terry Fox’s situational art. The artist’s catalogs contain numerous precise descriptions and memory sketches of his temporary works, written by the artist himself. For the first time, the publication absent – present TERRY FOX erinnern brings together narrations from the perspective of the viewers – people who have personally experienced his actions, performances and installations, which are bound to place and time. Together, they paint a portrait of an artist who shaped artistic events with his unique presence and created something in-the-moment, something that cannot be reproduced or replayed.

This collection of texts about a visual artist, which largely works without illustrations, deliberately breaks through the modern fixation on the image and opens up an opportunity to think differently about this work and its impact. In the context of the current art historical discussion on the historical preservation and archiving of ephemeral art, the publication aims to make an inspiring contribution.

Wort Schrift Zeichen – Das Alphabet der Kunst

Kolumba Museum, Köln
15.09.2023 – 14.08.2024

Word Script Sign – The Alphabet of Art

Kolumba Museum, Cologne
15.09.2023 – 14.08.2024

The annual exhibition 2023/24 is about the thematic fields of word script sign. „For if the word is to be of duration, it is bound to writing, it must be linked to script which in turn derives from the linear possibilities of drawing, while being itself a sign. When exactly does a drawing become a sign? And what about its ambivalence? (…) What happens to misused words when the deeds are not in harmony with them, and how much are words, and especially signs, connected with claims to power right up to our most recent present?“ (from: Kolumba Paperback #4. 9/2023)

On display are works from the 13th to the 21st century, including text drawings and objects by Terry Fox, which deal with language as an artistic material in very different ways. The installation Site Pendulum, which could already be experienced in the last exhibition „Site and Subject“, will also be presented for another year as part of the new exhibition.

„making being here enough” – Ort und Subjekt

Kolumba Museum, Köln
15.09.2022 – 14.08.2023

(Terry Fox – Ocular Language, 2000, S. 128)

„making being here enough” – Place and Self

Kolumba Museum, Köln
15.09.2022 – 14.08.2023

The exhibition explores the relationship between place and self through works of art spanning many centuries. From Terry Fox it presents the work: „Site Pendulum“ (first installed in 1977 at Site Gallery, San Francisco). The fascination for the universal lawfulness and symbolic power of the pendulum permeates Fox’s artistic work. Pendulums are used in numerous objects, performances and installations.

„I also had begun to work with pendulums since they bear an obvious relationship to the movement and rhythm of the labyrinth of Chartres Cathedral. One such work was a one-pound lead ball suspended from the ceiling by a piano wire and a glass half-filled with water resting on the floor. This pendulum was to be swung (…) in a wide and fast arc around the glass. As the orbit diminished, the ball moved slower and slower until it finally hit the glass with a gentle ringing. After this contact , the process of circling became analogous to the movement of the left and right turns of the path of the labyrinth path. The ball proceeded to revolve around the glass clockwise and then counterclockwise, hugging the edge of the glass as the cord it was suspended from wound and unwound.”
(Terry Fox – Ocular Language, 2000, p. 129ff)

In Kolumba Museum the pendulum hangs in room 17 from a ceiling about 10 meters high and is set in motion twice a day (1 and 3 pm).

Left-Sided Sleeper’s Dream

Kolumba Museum, Köln, 22. Juni – 15. August 2022

THE LABYRINTH SCORED FOR THE PURRS OF 11 CATS

Ö1, Radiokunst – Kunstradio, 03.07.2022, 23.00 Uhr

Info

A radio sculpture made of the sound of eleven purring cats: 552 steps, 11 concentric circles and 34 turns are contained in the enigmatic Chartres Labyrinth, which artist Terry Fox explored in the 1970s. He translated the structure of the floor mosaic in the piece „Labyrinth Scored for the Purrs of 11 Cats“ with the help of eleven cats: Patty, Miriam, Heba, Furgeson, Spot and Arthur from New York and from San Francisco Tom, Boogaloo, Puffin, Ernest and Samantha.

Kunstradio plays a short version of the original 90-minute piece, which was first broadcast by the American station KPFA in 1977 and was also heard on Ö1 in the same year in the series „Kunst Heute“ („Art Today“), supervised by Heidi Grundmann.

EREIGNIS

Living Archive (ark-hive) – Terry Fox

Moltkerei Werkstatt, Köln, 19. – 29.05.2022

Info/Programm

Two violin bows, an old metal cheese cover, cards with letters of the alphabet, a photo of Terry Fox riding his Vespa on a country road near Florence in 1986, the story of two piano wires stretched between a window frame and a kitchen cabinet, a hot plate with the potential of becoming an instrument, the memory of a performance that cannot be repeated… sounds unheard. Tracks of an artist’s life creating a space between absence and presence. The archive – an ark, a hive – creates echoes, that sound into the future.

Terry Fox: Resonance

Oct 1, 2019 – Dec 14, 2019

This multivenue exhibition both celebrates and aims to reinvigorate the spirit of Terry Fox (1943–2008), whose importance as a first-generation San Francisco Bay Area Conceptual artist cannot be exaggerated. For much of the 1970s Fox lived in San Francisco and was an integral part of the art activities that centered on Tom Marioni’s Museum of Conceptual Art. Like other like-minded artists nationally and internationally, Fox and his contemporaries—Howard Fried, David Ireland, Paul Kos, Linda Montano, Bonnie Sherk, and Marioni—abandoned the production of static art objects in favor of process works, video, installation, and performance. This unique project, curated by Dena Beard and Constance Lewallen, features a limited-edition catalog in the form of a box containing texts, recordings, and ephemera.

Venues: The Lab, The Wattis Institut, UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art & Library, San Francisco Art Institute Library, Cushion Works, Grace Cathedral, 871 Fine Arts.

The eye is not the only glass that burns the mind.
Terry Fox, die Schweiz und ‚anderwo‘

August 2018

The eye is not the only glass that burns the mind.
Terry Fox, Switzerland, and “Elsewhere”

August 2018

The retrospective „Terry Fox. Elemental Gestures“, which opened in 2015 at the Berlin Academy of the Arts and ended in Mons and Wuppertal in 2017 at the Kunstmuseum Bern, once again made clear both the artist’s central position and key role in the development of the arts since 1970. It not only presented Terry Fox (1943 – 2008) as a pioneer of body art, video art and sound installation, but also highlighted his important experimental explorations of language. A symposium on the occasion of the Berne exhibition reflected the performances and installations of this European American in Switzerland, using a wide variety of approaches. It forms the basis of the publication, in which scholars, artists, close colleagues and companions seek to examine the often quiet „situations“ between things and language, sound and sculpture, labyrinth and experience, body and action that Terry Fox created and explored throughout his works.

Terry Fox – audio works

June 2018

„audio works“, first published in 1983 by Maurizio Nannucci in the Recorthings series of audiocassette, during a period in which Fox lived in Florence, is among the rarest documents of the artist’s body of sound work to be issued during his lifetime. Finally reissued, an important aspect of this recording is that, rather than focusing on a single work like most of the artist’s releases, it offers one of the broader representations of his practice, featuring five stunning works „Culvert“, „Lunar Rambles“, „Timbre“,
„Cat Purrs Ending“, and „Flu Alarm“, each offering a unique window into the diversity of his approach. Filled with a remarkable range of sonority – drones, squeals, pluses, purrs, and klangs, „audio works“ is a true celebration of creativity through sound, built from Fox’s practice of close attention to everyday phenomena and aspects of social existence.

Terry Fox’s work on the Berlin Wall consists of various sketches and drawings under the title Berlin Wall Scored for Sound which were developed during his stay in Berlin as a DAAD fellow in 1980/81. In many of these drawings the outlines of the Berlin wall were laid over a topographic system, in which spatial coordinates are mapped to time durations and contours are categorized and identified by letters of the alphabet. An audio realization based on these drawings uses sound recordings from Terry Fox’s own personal audio performance archive, and was issued in 1988 under the title „Berlino“ (Het Apollohuis, Einhoven).

Arnold Dreyblatt: „In my interpretation of Terry Fox’s score, I interpreted the assigned letters in the drawings as musical pitches, with the exception of “X” which I have mapped to “silence”. I found it interesting that the letters of the alphabet which he chose represent the lines of the treble staff. Furthermore I have noted that his work often contains musical references and could be understood as a kind of “open” score for possible performance. I applied the precise durations for each letter/pitch found in the drawing, resulting in a linear composition of 15 minutes and 32 seconds. In preparing this realization, I kept in mind the resonating sustaining sonorities of Terry Fox’s legendary sonic performances on long piano wires in architectural spaces, as well as his collaborations with instrumentalists (for example the cellos and double bass in Rallentando, 1988) and my own background as a minimalist composer. ( … ) This new version, performed by the Kairos String Quartet, comes closest to Terry Fox’s lifelong exploration of harmonic string vibration.“ (quote from: Sonification – Transfer into Musical Arts, program book, page 66/67)

Terry Fox – 552 Steps Through 11 Pairs of Strings

May 2017

When Terry Fox went from San Francisco to Europe in 1972, he discovered the pavement labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral. It consists of 11 concentric rings with 552 steps and 34 turns leading into the center. He based all of his works until 1978 on the labyrinth. These include two major sound works, one of which „The Labyrinth Scored for the Purrs of 11 Cats“ was later released on cassette and LP, while the other has remained unreleased so far: „552 Steps Through 11 Pairs of Strings“.
This piece was a performance made in Fox’s studio in San Francisco on August 14, 1976, lasting 4½ hours. He stretched 11 pairs of piano wires of 11 different thicknesses across the floor. The whole took the shape of a giant horizontal harp. Fox played this instrument with a soft mallet in one hand and a score in the other. The score was a 34-foot string tied with 552 knots. Each knot represented a step in the labyrinth with the 34 turns indicated by either a piece of wire in a knot (a move to the next longer pair of wires) or a rubber band around a knot (a move to the next shorter pair). The audience was in the dark loft of the floor below. Their room became the sounding box of Fox’s instrument above them.

This double LP includes four selections from the performance. A gatefold sleeve reproduces the score, a photograph and drawing of the instrument, and the invitation card to the performance. Texts by Terry Fox and Alan Scarritt.

Terry Fox – The Eye’s Not The Only Glass That Burns The Mind

Kunstmuseum Bern, 05. und 06. Mai 2017

Terry Fox – The Eye’s Not The Only Glass That Burns The Mind

Kunstmuseum Bern, 5th and 6th of May, 2017

Stimulated by the ideas of Terry Fox, new research on his life and art, the tracks of his oeuvre in Switzerland, and his upcoming retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Bern, this Symposium seeks to enrich the newly current scientific debate revolving around the expanded term „work/oeuvre“ through new research and intellectual approaches. At the same time the art-immanent categorization of work, performance, sound, text- image- or video art, have to be re-evaluated in the light of the multi-layered works of Terry Fox, which defy traditional art historic categories, and which reside at the very threshold between „existence“ and „nothingness“.

The Symposium is hosted by the Kunstmuseum Bern, Institut of art history/University of Bern, Bern University of the Arts, Robert Walser Center Bern, Terry Fox Association e.V. Köln

Extended Compositions

Kunsthaus CentrePasqueArt Biel, Schweiz, 09.04.17 – 11.06.17

Von Terry Fox wird die Klanginstallation – The Labyrinth Scored for the Purrs of 11 Different Cats, 1973 präsentiert.

Ein Ausstellungsprojekt veranstaltet vom Kunsthaus Centre PasquArt Biel/ Bienne, Schweiz in Kooperation mit der Hochschule der Künste Bern Schweiz.

Publikation / Michael Glasmeier: Geräusche, Ritornelle für eine Kunstgeschichte des Klangs.
Von Fra Angelico und Monteverdi zu Marcel Duchamp und Terry Fox
Juni 2016

  1. Kurzfristige Anwesenheit. Terry Fox in Bremen und Worpswede
  2. Das Kaum und das Bestimmte. „The School of Velocity“ von Terry Fox

Elemental Gestures – Terry Fox

Elemental Gestures – Terry Fox

Academy of Arts Berlin, 6.11.15 – 10.01.16

An artists’ artist awaits rediscovery: The American artist Terry Fox (1943–2008), who was based in Europe for many years, and his innovative and provocative cross-media work. Fox’s political and anarchistic performances and videotapes made in the USA are juxtaposed to the pioneering role he played for the sound art scene developing in Europe. His collaborative actions with Joseph Beuys, Vito Acconci, Dennis Oppenheim and Bill Viola are legendary. Fox used his own body as a medium for borderline experiences and humorously played with the transformation of the simplest materials. Using the term situation, he was one of the first artists to criticize the commercialization of performance art and to expose the problems and technological limitations that influence how events are recorded. The exhibition creates associative thinking spaces related to themes in Fox’s oeuvre: Situations – Körperliche Zustände, Elements – Material, Mapping – Labyrinth, Sound as Sculpture – Raum als Instrument. Previously unpublished video, photographic materials and Fox’s work notes are exhibited for the first time.

The exhibition is curated by Arnold Dreyblatt and Angela Lammert.

Symposium

Terry Fox – Situations

Academy of Arts Berlin, 06.11.2015

On the occasion of Elemental Gestures – Terry Fox, a solo exhibition at the Academy of Arts, Berlin, the Terry Fox Asssociation (TFA, Köln) is holding a symposium with lectures, discussions, and a film program. In the spirit of the goal of the TFA to replenish and investigate the complex and multilayered oeuvre of Terry Fox, the TFA invites a roundtable group of his artist colleagues and friends to have a closer look and to analyse certain forms of actions, poetics of space, and elemental practices of presence and concentration. Because even though the artist himself precisely described and reflected on his work the complexity and breadth of the art of Terry Fox has, until now, just been explored rudimentarily.

With Michael Glasmeier, Wulf Herzogenrath, Gabriele Knapstein, Hans Peter Kuhn, Marita Loosen-Fox, Ron Meyers, Matthias Osterwold, Carsten Seiffarth, Bernd Schulz, Ulli Seegers, Lisa Steib. In cooperation with the Academy of Arts, Berlin (in German, entrance free)

Terry Fox – The Labyrinth Scored For Eleven Different Cats

October 2009

The legendary American artist Terry Fox is known for his pioneering work in performance, sculpture, drawing and installation. Throughout his career, Fox focused on sound as a fundamental artistic material. Many of his most important sound works were realized long before terms such as „sound art“ or „audio art“ became widely known.
This recording, „The Labyrinth Scored For 11 Different Cats“ (1977), is now recognized as an early classic of the audio art genre. It is one of Fox’s many works to be inspired by the structure of the labyrinth found on the floor of the famous medieval cathedral of Chartres. For this work, Fox translated the 552 Steps, 11 concentric rings and 34 turns of the floor mosaic into a mesmerizing composition of recorded cat purrs, a sonic phenomenon which is still not fully understood. The „purrs“ resonate in a shimmering wall of sound like in an uncanny feline orchestra. This LP recording is based on a digital version that Fox produced in 2003 in the sound studio of the „Academy of Media Arts“ in Cologne, Germany. (Arnold Dreyblatt, Oct. 2009)
